Being a Catholic and a Democrat PDF Print E-mail

I was a Democrat first and a Christian later. I finally became Catholic a few years back because it encompassed so much of what I believe and still do. But I do not agree with everything the US Catholic Bishops have taught. Some of it I think is a little contradictory. Like... preserve life yet condone "justifiable" war. The importance of reconsilliation...but you need to do it atleast "once a year". They send mixed messages. Like the poster above many Catholics like to think themselves Republicans...But the Republican party is and has been anything but compassionate to the poor, good stewards of Gods land, working for fair work environments and fair wages for the worker...Their attitude have always been for those that have not the have nots. Abortion..totally against it BUT..I do believe their should be some leave way for extreme medical situations. We had a wonderful mother of six in out church who had to have abortion because the pregnancy was killing her. The child didn't have a brain and could not live outside the womb. It had no brain to function a heart or lungs. She was in the hospital for the better part of a month. The people in our church treated her less than they treat the criminials in our maximum security prison they visit. Some have compassion for them yet no one would stand up for this family. Her family had to go to another church it was so shameful. We must use compassion and common sense in our faith not just what we are told to think. I like to remember that Jesus never created an army or military action, he or his apostles never even carried protection for themselves. He had compassion and humility and common sense that we today seem to have given up on trying to achieve. We must make ourselves more like Christ and follow his standard. Father Luke Fahr wrote something similiar in one of his books...War was never created by God, no violence or bad thing can come from him...it is only mans interpretation of Gods will that create these problems.

One more example

This is another example of when abortion might be justified. Saying 'might be justified' makes me feel funny. I cannot judge what reasons another woman has for her decision's in life. My oldest daughter is teacher. There was a teacher in her district who became pregnant with her 5th child. She found out about a week after she discovered she was pregnant that she also had cancer. She was Catholc and refused treatment until after the baby was born. this Mom died shortly after the baby was born leaving her husband with 5 children under 7. my daughter went to the funeral at one of our local parishes. The dad tried to take care of them but couldn't (I don't know if he was too depressed, traveled for his job or couldn't afford them??). All of the children were farmed out to relatives. These children lost a mom and a dad. I don't know what the answer is but this family paid a huge price.
Abortion should be legal but rare.

MD I would like to see abortion remain legal but very rare. There was a case in Brazil where a 9 yr old girl became pregnant with twins after being raped by her stepfather. Brazil has a very Catholic, very tough hardline on abortion. Abortion is illegal in Brazil. The doctors told the girl's Mom that her pelvis wasn't big enough to carry these twins. The girl would die. the Mom consented to an abortion to save her daughter. The Catholic Church in Brazil excommunicated the Mom and the doctors but not the stepfather because although what the stepfather did was heinous, it wasn't as bad as the abortion. I don't know what Mom would watch her 9 yr old daughter die this way. this story received quite a bit of media coverage for a while. Here is the link to the article from Time Magazine:

Dear MD,
THANK YOU for expressing your thoughts. I can certainly identify. I'm blessed to be among many who believe as we do. I'm involved in a (mainly) conservative catholic online community...I like to shake things up a bit ;o)
Your example is most powerful.
God bless you.
